FRICK COLLECTION 1 East 70th St 212.288.0700 Closed Mondays. At the corner of 5th Avenue. European fine and decorative arts on display in the 1914 mansion, the former home of the industrialist Henry Clay Frick.
The quiet and moneyed neighborhood of exclusive white glove apartment houses, mansions and brownstones between Fifth and Lexington Avenues is where wealthy and society-minded New York has entrenched itself since the late 1800s. 20th and 21st century American art in a signature Marcel Breuer 1966 inverted pyramid building design. Floating on the border turf of Central Park the museum consumes the streetscape with its plaza and central stairway. The collections are vast and engaging. SOLOMON R. GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM 1071 5th Ave Take a visit for your fill of Non-Objective, Modern and Contemporary arts from the 19th Century to the present. The Frank Lloyd Wright 1959 building is a uniquely Modernist inverted spiral design. JEWISH MUSEUM 1109 5th Ave Galleries dedicated to the Jewish cultural identity and visual arts. Housed in the former mansion of Felix Warburg, a French Gothic chateau-style design completed in 1908. CENTRAL PARK ZOO 830 5th Ave From aquatic life to tropical terrains, it's all about the animal kingdom. There's a fantasy appeal to this Central Park attraction. COOPER-HEWITT DESIGN MUSEUM 2 East 91st St Founded in 1897 with the mission of enhancing and fostering the understanding of historic and contemporary design in decorative arts. The museum is located in the former Beaux Arts mansion of Andrew Carnegie. NEUE GALERIE 1048 5th Ave A grand French chateau design from 1914 by Carrere & Hastings, architects of the New York Public Library. The one time Vanderbilt Mansion is now a museum dedicated to early 20th Century German and Austrian art and design.
Stroll Madison Avenue from 57th to 86th Streets for world renown haute couture boutiques, jewelry shops and art galleries for those who dress to shop. The same stretch along Lexington Avenue has an interesting mix of similar, though not as glamorous shops and boutiques along with the department store behemoth that is Bloomingdales at 59th street.
MAISON KAYSER 1294 Third AvenueFrom Parisian based baker comes Maison Kayser. Yes, you can stop here for a sit down dine for a quiche or a croque with the very kiss-kiss Euros and Euro wannabes but best bet are the bakes. Breads, viennoiserie and patisserie that are some of New York's
