So, it looks as though you might have to add cupcakes to the TSA 3-1-1 rules. Check out this link by way of HuffPost Travel and Newsy- wow, talk about flour power and one icy and sugary cupcake threat. Story goes that a cupcake in a metal lidded glass jar set off bells at the airport security check point though, the cake nor its creamy center were the presumed danger – the security officer deduced [...]
Fasten your “swing” belts for MOLLY’S CUPCAKES, yet another player in the cupcake craze (and, “craze” is the operative word when it comes to cupcakes). From their simplest, the Classic, to the gooey Center-Filled, these steroid laden cupcakes go overboard in sheer size and garish style. Sort of makes sense as these cupcakes are good in combat – they won the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars- but for us they don’t transition well back into civilian [...]
I was all jazzed about my first visit to PARM, the new outpost from the folks at TORRISI ITALIAN SPECIALTIES, the next door resto with an exceptionally fine-tuned localvore-minded prix fixe menu. Lots of top-notch ingredients to the chicken parm hero, and then some: the crispy cutlets, the sauce (if not better than Nonna’s, a close second), the fresh mozzarella and basil (not in my memory of the chicken parm charm of yore), and the [...]
A little note from FAMOUS RAYS, Greenwich Village. We got used to the the corner shop being around but we won’t miss these gloppy gooey pies. Landmark yes, but exceptional pizzeria no. Buona Sera Ray, Buona Ray. Don’t be sad though, you’re steps away from some exceptional New York pies along the MAPPETITE MILE.
Another one for the Italians. Flavorful scoops of artisanal ice creams and sorbets of ingredients sourced from organic and sustainable centric purveyors. A cool and refreshing repast when its impossible to beat the heat in city streets. I glom for GROM and so will you. 233 Bleecker Street (Carmine St); 1796 Broadway (58th Street); 2165 Broadway (76th Street). Daily 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Pastrami on rye? Matzoh ball soup? Quinoa Varnishkes? Charoset chopped salad and it’s not even close to Passover? Lots of classic dishes take on a modern spin with the Jewish deli re-imagined at KUTSHER’S TRIBECA. With its heritage in the borscht belt hotel of the same name, let’s just hope KUTSHER’S does grandma justice. 186 Franklin Street (between Hudson and Greenwich Streets), NYC, tel. 212.431-0606.
PARM, the new resto from the folks at TORRISI ITALIAN SPECIALTIES is a star player in everything parmigiana. Cool retro style and hefty comfort fare make this the likely first in a chain of hero hot spots. 248 Mulberry Street (between Prince and Spring Streets).
UPSTATE for a tight menu of superior seafood paired to cheese plates. Thirsty? Lots of crafty drafts on hand at this sliver village spot. 95 1st Avenue, btwn 6th & 7th Streets. No res. www.upstatenyc.com
BROOKLYN TACO now at Essex Street Market. Still no Ferry Building but if you’re in the part of town, a pleasant enough excursion. Also, got to love the gal for Greek eats.
