Don’t get your hopes up for an overwhelming food extravaganza at the Essex Street Market. We love the concept of the old school indoor food hall – the Essex location was created over 70 years ago to get the pushcarts off the streets of the Lower East Side but, what remains of the past is not inspiring. The slew of stalls offering fish, meat, produce and sundries are of unexceptional quality. We love some of the new merchants like Pain D’Avignon, Fromaggio Essex and Saxelby Cheesmongers. And, we’re game for joe at Porto Rico Importing Company and chocolates from the less than artisanal refines of Ronnie-Sue’s. But, a few good vendors do not a great food hall make. There are lots of markets around town with high caliber breads, cheeses, chocolates and coffees to spare. Until some real culinary bustle ups the ante, a trip to Essex Street Market is a yawn, yawn, yawn. Essex Street Market, 120 Essex Street, between Delancy and Rivington Streets. Closed Sundays.
